My mom called me on Friday morning in tears. "They let me go Kel,"she blurted trying to catch her breath. For a moment neither of us spoke. I listened to her sobbing on the other line. My mom worked for the state for 26 years and just like that they informed her that her position had been eliminated due to cutbacks. No package, no options, just...see you later.
Not only that, it was a stranger who did it. My mom had never met this man before in her life. He offered no answers. "Did I do something wrong?" my mom asked. "No."
She was escorted from the building by two men and told that they would mail her things to her.
She will have no health insurance after May.
How cold. How unfair. How can they just do that?
UPDATE
My mom filed an appeal and got offered another position. She is most likely going to take it so that she can still retire when she planned to with her full pension. It has been a really rough week for her. She hasn't been sleeping. I still don't understand how they can do that? Thank you very much for all of your prayers and advice. I appreciate it.

Awe, that is horrible! Not only to lose her position, but no further explanation, or anything.. Yowsa! I will be praying for your mom, Kel. Something will work out for her!
Oh my gosh Kelly!!!
I'm heartbroken and outraged for your mom!!!
Can she call a lawyer for some advice?
That just can't be right. :-(
How Horrible! I am sitting here shaking my head in disbelief. How can they can do that to her?
I can't believe that's right! There has to be something she can do....I will keep your Mom in my thoughts and prayers.
I'm so sorry your Mom has to go through this terrible ordeal. Prayers!
OMG Kel...are you serious? She needs to contact a lawyer ASAP!!! She needs to find out if any other employees were let go...it's not uncommom if she deals w/"Classified" information on the job that she would be escorted out of the building in that manner as mean as it is...I'm not sure if she is considered a "Civil Service" employee where she works for the state. If she is...have her log onto the General Laws of Ma., Chapter 31: Section 39. Separation from employment; lack of work or money; abolition of position. This section may apply to her. My thoughts and prayers are with your Mom, no one needs this kick in the gut. Everything happens for a reason...I know it's hard to think of that now...but some how, some way...there is a reason for this. Hopefully her head is clear today where she can start the process to get to the bottom of this. She has a right to see her "personnal" file...maybe that's a start!
Thank you girls. Pat, I will pass the information to her. She is meeting with her financial adviser this morning as well. Thank you again friends for the thoughts and prayers...my poor mum. :(
Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear this. How awful that must have been (and still be) for her after dedicating all those years. My prayers are with your Mom, I hope that a silver lining is found somewhere in this.
